What this does

Estimates the tons of asphalt (or bitumen) required for paving projects by converting area dimensions and thickness into volume, then applying the material density and a waste allowance. It supports both imperial (feet, inches) and metric (meters, millimeters) unit systems and can calculate cost when a price per ton is provided.

How it works

The calculator multiplies length by width (or uses a direct area entry) to get the surface area, converts thickness to feet, and multiplies to find volume in cubic feet. Volume is multiplied by the material density (default 145 lb/ft³) and divided by 2,000 to get short tons. A waste percentage is applied on top, and if a price per ton is entered, the total material cost is displayed.

Limitations

Uses a fixed density assumption (customizable) and does not account for compaction factors, base layers, tack coats, or site-specific mix design variations. Cost estimates are material-only and exclude delivery, labor, equipment, and site preparation.

Reference ranges

Asphalt Density
Standard hot mix asphalt (HMA) density ranges from 140-150 lb/ft³ (2,240-2,400 kg/m³). The calculator defaults to 145 lb/ft³, which is appropriate for most residential and commercial mixes.
Typical Thickness
Residential driveways: 2-3 inches. Commercial parking lots: 3-4 inches. Heavy-duty roads and industrial: 4-6 inches. Thinner applications may need a stronger base.
Waste Allowance
5% for simple rectangular driveways. 8-10% for irregular shapes, curved edges, or layouts with obstacles. 15% for complex patterns or matching existing pavement.
Cost per Ton
Asphalt prices typically range from $100-200 per ton depending on region, mix type, and oil prices. A standard 2-car driveway (about 5-8 tons) costs $500-1,600 for material.

The full formula is: (area in sq ft × thickness in ft × 145 lb/ft³) / 2000 = short tons. The metric equivalent uses square meters, millimeters, and kg/m³ converted through the same volume math.

A short ton (US ton) equals 2,000 pounds or about 907 kg. A metric tonne equals 1,000 kg or about 2,205 pounds. The calculator shows both so you can order from US suppliers (short tons) or international suppliers (metric tonnes) without manual conversion.

A standard single-car driveway (10 ft × 20 ft × 2.5 inches) needs about 2.5-3 tons. A two-car driveway (20 ft × 20 ft × 3 inches) needs about 7-8 tons. Always add 5-10% for waste and compaction to ensure you order enough.

Yes. Check the 'Custom density' option and enter your own value in lb/ft³. This is useful if your supplier specifies a different density for your particular mix design, or if you are estimating a different material like crushed stone or recycled asphalt.

Yes. The volume-to-weight math works the same for reclaimed or recycled asphalt (RAP). RAP may have a slightly lower density (135-140 lb/ft³) than virgin hot mix, so adjust the density setting if your supplier provides a specific value.
