How it works
ERA is computed using ERA = (earned runs × game innings) / innings pitched. WHIP is computed as (Hits + Walks) / innings pitched. For partial innings, outs are converted to thirds (1 out = 1/3, 2 outs = 2/3). Normalized 9-Inning ERA converts 6- or 7-inning league ERAs to a 9-inning MLB baseline. Defense Impact Ratio calculates unearned runs allowed due to defensive errors.
Limitations
ERA and WHIP are standard rate metrics that do not adjust for ballpark dimensions, defense efficiency behind the pitcher, or opponent lineup strength. Advanced metrics like FIP and SIERA isolate pitching performance further.

- Basic ERA Formula
- Multiply earned runs by regulation game length, then divide by innings pitched. ERA = (earnedRuns × gameInnings) / inningsPitched
- WHIP Formula (Walks + Hits per IP)
- Divide total hits and walks allowed by innings pitched. WHIP = (Hits + Walks) / inningsPitched
- Normalized 9-Inning ERA Formula
- Converts any regulation game length (e.g. 6 or 7 innings) to a standard 9-inning scale. Normalized ERA9 = (earnedRuns × 9) / inningsPitched
- Defense Impact Ratio
- Calculates unearned runs resulting from fielding errors. Defense Impact = (Total Runs - Earned Runs) / Total Runs
- Partial Innings (Whole + Outs)
- Convert outs to decimal innings where each out is one-third. inningsPitched = wholeInnings + outs / 3. For example, 5.2 means 5 + 2/3 = 5.667 innings.
- Scorebook Notation
- Scorebook format uses .1 for one out (1/3) and .2 for two outs (2/3). 5.1 = 5⅓ innings, 5.2 = 5⅔ innings, 6.0 = 6 full innings.

- MLB Elite Range
- Sub-3.00 ERA and sub-1.10 WHIP represent elite MLB performance (Cy Young contenders).
- MLB Average Range
- Modern MLB average ERA falls between 3.80-4.50 with a WHIP around 1.25-1.35.
- College and High School
- High school averages range from 4.50-6.50 ERA and 1.35-1.55 WHIP due to fielding variances.
- Softball ERA Scale
- Softball ERAs are lower on a per-game basis due to shorter game lengths (6 or 7 innings). Normalized 9-Inning ERA helps align softball and baseball metrics.

WHIP is calculated by dividing total hits and walks allowed by total innings pitched: WHIP = (Hits + Walks) / IP. A WHIP below 1.25 indicates strong performance, while a WHIP below 1.00 is considered elite.
Normalized 9-Inning ERA converts 6-inning (softball) or 7-inning (high school) ERA stats to a standard 9-inning MLB baseline using (Earned Runs × 9) / IP, allowing equal comparison across leagues.
Defense Impact Ratio measures the percentage of total runs that were unearned due to defensive errors: (Total Runs - Earned Runs) / Total Runs. A high ratio indicates that fielding errors significantly inflated total runs allowed.
Use the outs selector in Basic mode (0, 1, or 2 outs) or switch to Scorebook mode and type 5.1 (5⅓ IP) or 5.2 (5⅔ IP).
