Paver Calculator FAQ

Spacing-aware patio takeoff for circles, triangles, mixed sizes, and retailer package planning.

FAQ

How does spacing change the count?+

Spacing expands the effective module size of each paver, so the same patio area needs fewer units than a tight face-to-face layout. For example, a 4×8 in paver with 1/4 in spacing behaves like a 4.25×8.25 in module, reducing the total count across the full area.

Can I calculate a circle patio?+

Yes, the circle mode uses the radius or diameter to compute the circular area and applies a default circle waste factor on top of your spacing setting. Curved cuts inherently produce more waste than rectangular layouts, so the calculator adjusts accordingly.

Can I mix paver sizes?+

Yes, add rows for each paver size and assign a portion of the total area to each row. The calculator totals the units, packages, and cost across all rows, and the material sheet shows a breakdown by size.

Are the retailer prices live?+

No, the Lowe's, Home Depot, Menards, and custom presets are editable planning defaults based on typical pack sizes and price ranges. They are not live inventory or real-time pricing from the stores. Always verify current prices at your local retailer.

What material total does it include?+

The material sheet includes paver count by size, paver packages, gravel volume, bedding sand volume, polymeric joint sand estimate, edging length, and a total budget range. All material quantities are adjustable.

Do I need to compact the base?+

Yes, proper paver installation requires compacting the gravel base in 2-4 in lifts, then a screeded layer of bedding sand before placing the pavers. The calculator estimates material volumes but does not model compaction factors or soil conditions.

What if my patio is an irregular shape?+

For irregular shapes, divide the area into rectangles, triangles, and partial circles, then use the Mixed Sizes mode or run each section separately and add the totals. This gives a more accurate count than trying to estimate a complex polygon in one pass.
