About this calculator

Method, formulas, and limits.

What this does

Projects a Roth IRA balance from a starting amount and monthly contributions to retirement age, separating growth from contributions and reporting the tax-free value.

Who it is for

People comparing Roth IRA growth scenarios, planning how much to contribute monthly, or checking how a balance compounds to retirement without tax drag.

How it works

The tool grows the balance at a constant effective monthly return, adds the monthly contribution, optionally grows contributions over time, and reports the projected balance at the selected retirement age.

Limitations

This is a deterministic educational estimate. It does not model contribution-limit enforcement, taxes on non-qualified withdrawals, fees, market volatility, or Roth rule changes.

Key calculations

Monthly projection
endBalance = startBalance + startBalance × monthlyReturn + monthlyContribution
Growing contribution
monthlyContributionInYearN = monthlyContribution × (1 + contributionGrowth)^(N − 1)
Tax-free value
taxFreeValue = endingBalance (qualified Roth distributions)

How to use it

  1. 1.Enter your account and contributionAdd the current Roth IRA balance and the amount you plan to contribute each month.
  2. 2.Choose growth and contribution assumptionsUse a realistic rate for your asset mix; contributions can also grow annually at the entered rate.
  3. 3.Set the time horizonThe calculator projects from your current age to your planned retirement age.
  4. 4.Review the projectionCheck the year-by-year balance, contribution, and growth, plus the tax-free value at retirement.

It projects how a Roth IRA balance grows when you make regular contributions and the money compounds over time. Because qualified Roth distributions are tax-free, the projected balance is also the tax-free value if the rules are followed.

Contributions to a Roth IRA are after-tax, and qualified withdrawals of earnings are tax-free. A traditional IRA may offer a deduction now but taxes the withdrawal. This calculator models the after-tax Roth path.

No. The calculator lets you enter any contribution amount as a planning assumption. Actual annual limits and catch-up eligibility are set by the IRS and can change year to year.

Use a long-term assumption that matches your asset mix. Many planning scenarios use around 5–7% nominal, but the right number depends on your portfolio and time horizon. Test a range.

Qualified Roth distributions — taken after age 59½ from an account held at least five years, or under other qualifying rules — are generally tax-free. This calculator assumes qualified status and current rules.
