About this calculator

What this does

Estimates annual and per-payment dividend income from SCHD based on shares owned or total investment amount. Supports after-tax calculations, DRIP (dividend reinvestment) projections with fractional shares, and a multi-year growth chart showing how reinvesting dividends compounds share count over time.

Who it is for

Income-focused investors who hold or are considering SCHD in their portfolio. Useful for estimating passive dividend income, comparing DRIP vs. cash scenarios, and projecting how dividend growth contributes to long-term total return.

How it works

The calculator computes pre-tax income as shares × annual dividend per share. After-tax income applies the user's tax rate to the gross dividend on the day of each payment. In DRIP mode, the full pre-tax dividend amount is used to buy fractional shares at the current price each quarter, and those new shares begin earning dividends in subsequent periods.

Limitations

Uses a fixed annual dividend per share and does not model dividend growth, cuts, or special dividends. Past dividend history is no guarantee of future payouts. The DRIP projection assumes the share price stays constant and dividends remain flat, which does not reflect real market conditions.

Formula

Pre-Tax Dividend Income

annualIncome = shares × annualDividendPerShare. The per-payment amount is annualIncome divided by the number of payment periods per year.

After-Tax Dividend Income

afterTaxIncome = annualIncome × (1 - taxRate). The tax rate is applied to the gross dividend each period, reducing the cash received if DRIP is off.

DRIP Share Growth

When DRIP is enabled, newShares = dividendAmount / sharePrice each period. These fractional shares are added to the total and begin earning dividends in the next cycle.

Future Cumulative Income

The total accumulated income over the DRIP projection is the sum of all pre-tax dividend payments across every period, displayed alongside the growing share balance on the chart.

How it works

Step 1

Choose calculation mode

Select By Shares to enter a specific number of shares, or By Investment to calculate how many shares your dollar amount buys at the current price.

Step 2

Enter your inputs

Fill in shares or investment amount, share price, annual dividend per share, and dividend frequency (quarterly or annual).

Step 3

Set tax rate and DRIP

Enter your tax rate for after-tax estimates. Toggle DRIP on and set a projection period in years to see how reinvesting compounds your position.

Step 4

Review your results

Check the annual dividend income, after-tax income, per-payment breakdown, and the DRIP projection chart showing share growth and cumulative dividends.

Reference ranges

SCHD Dividend Yield

SCHD's trailing dividend yield has historically ranged from 3.0% to 4.0%. The fund targets high-dividend stocks with sustainable payout ratios.

Dividend Growth Rate

SCHD has grown its dividend at a compound annual rate of roughly 10-12% since inception, though past growth does not guarantee future increases.

Qualified Dividend Tax Rates

Qualified dividends are taxed at 0% (0-15% income bracket), 15% (15% bracket up to ~$500k), or 20% (top bracket). Most SCHD distributions are qualified.

DRIP Compounding Impact

Over 10 years, DRIP can increase share count by 30-50% at current yield levels, significantly boosting total return compared to taking dividends as cash.
