Most dealers pay 70–95% of melt value for scrap silver

  1. 1

    Weight to Grams

    grams = weight × conversion factor (troy oz = 31.1035 g, oz = 28.3495 g)

  2. 2

    Pure Silver

    pureSilver = grams × purity% / 100

  3. 3

    Melt Value

    meltValue = pureSilver × spotPricePerGram

  4. 4

    Dealer Payout

    scrapValue = meltValue × dealerPayout% / 100

Troy ounces (31.1 g) are the international standard for silver trading — don't confuse them with regular ounces (28.35 g).

US silver coins minted before 1965 are 90% silver (coin silver). Most silver jewelry is 925 sterling (92.5%).

Silver prices are always quoted per troy ounce in international markets. Check a live price source before selling.

About this calculator

Method, formulas, and limits.

What this does

Calculates the melt value of scrap silver and estimates how much a dealer would pay. Enter the weight, purity (sterling, coin, fine, or custom), current spot price, and the dealer payout percentage to see the full breakdown.

Who it is for

Anyone selling silver jewelry, coins, flatware, or scrap: pawnshop customers, estate sellers, collectors, and precious-metal investors who want a fair baseline before negotiating.

How it works

The calculator converts your weight to grams, applies the purity percentage to find pure silver content, normalizes the spot price per gram, computes the melt value, and finally applies the dealer payout percentage to estimate what you would actually receive.

Limitations

Uses the spot price you enter and a payout percentage you choose — it is not live market data. Actual dealer offers vary by market conditions, item condition, and region.

Reference ranges

Common Purities
925 sterling = 92.5% silver, 900 coin = 90%, 999 fine = 99.9%. US coins before 1965 are 90% silver.
Dealer Payout Rates
Typical scrap payouts range from 70% to 95% of melt value. Lower is common for low-purity or damaged items.
Spot Price Quoting
Silver is quoted per troy ounce (31.1035 g) in international markets. Gram prices are the troy-ounce price divided by 31.1035.

How to use it

  1. 1.Enter the weightType the weight of your silver item and choose the unit (grams, troy oz, oz, kg, or lb).
  2. 2.Pick the puritySelect a quick preset (Jewelry, Coin, Fine, Silverware) or choose a specific purity and enter a custom percentage if needed.
  3. 3.Set the spot priceEnter today's silver spot price and select the price unit and currency.
  4. 4.Adjust the dealer payoutSet the payout percentage (70–95% is typical) to see what you would likely receive.
  5. 5.Review the resultsCheck the melt value, estimated scrap value, and full calculation steps before selling.

Multiply the weight in grams by the purity percentage to get pure silver content, multiply by the spot price per gram to get melt value, then apply the dealer payout percentage. For example, 100 g of 925 sterling at $0.96/g melt = 100 × 0.925 × 0.96 = $88.80, and at 80% payout you would receive about $71.04.

Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals (usually copper). It is the standard for silver jewelry and flatware. Items stamped 925, STERLING, or STER are sterling.

Most dealers pay 70–95% of melt value, depending on the item, quantity, and market conditions. Pawn shops typically pay the low end, while refiners and specialized buyers pay closer to melt value.
