Siding Calculator FAQ

Siding takeoff for house perimeters, gable ends, square feet, package counts, and cost.

FAQ

What is a siding square?+

One siding square is a standard unit of measurement equal to 100 square feet of wall area. It is the same concept used in roofing and helps contractors communicate material quantities quickly. If your order area is 2,450 sq ft, that is 24.5 siding squares.

How do I measure siding for a house?+

Calculate the exterior perimeter and multiply by wall height. Add the area of gable triangles (width x rise / 2), then subtract the total area of windows and doors. The calculator handles all of this math automatically in House mode—just enter the perimeter, wall height, gable dimensions, and openings.

How do I calculate package counts for store products?+

Enter the 'Coverage per unit' (sq ft) found on the product packaging. The calculator will automatically round up to the nearest full box, panel, or board required for your order area. For example, if each vinyl box covers 24 sq ft and your order area is 1,200 sq ft, you will need 50 boxes.

What waste percentage should I use?+

A standard 10% waste allowance works for most simple, rectangular houses. If your house has many corners, gables, or you are using a material with a distinct pattern that requires matching, increase waste to 12-15%. The material presets include suggested defaults for each type.

Can I use this for non-rectangular houses?+

The calculator works best for houses with rectangular walls and standard gable ends. For L-shaped or complex floor plans, use the Direct Area mode and enter the total wall area manually. You can also adjust the openings area to account for unusual features.

Does the cost estimate include labor?+

No. The cost estimate is material-only based on your price per square foot. Professional installation labor typically runs $1.50-$4.50 per sq ft depending on material and complexity. Always get multiple contractor quotes for a complete project budget.

Can I switch materials after entering measurements?+

Yes. The material presets only affect the suggested waste percentage and the package label. Your measurements stay the same when switching between Generic, Vinyl, Fiber Cement, or Engineered Wood, so you can compare takeoff results instantly.
