What this does

Calculates the exact number of days, months, and years since your sobriety date, tracks recovery milestones, shows a countdown to your next upcoming milestone, and provides an optional money-saved estimate based on your pre-sobriety daily spending.

Who it is for

Anyone tracking their sobriety journey — whether you are in a 12-step program, counting days on your own, supporting a loved one, or simply curious about how long it has been since your last drink.

How it works

Enter your sobriety date and the calculator counts the exact days, months, and years since that date. It checks known recovery milestones (1 day, 1 week, 30/60/90 days, 6 months, 1/2/3/5/10 years) and shows which you have achieved, plus a countdown to your next one. An optional daily-spend field multiplies the days sober by your pre-sobriety cost per day to estimate total money saved.

Limitations

This is a motivational tool and counter, not a medical or clinical assessment. Recovery timelines vary by individual. Milestone labels follow common celebration markers but are not clinical benchmarks. The money-saved calculation is a rough estimate only and does not account for inflation, spending changes, or non-drinking-related expenses.

Key calculations

Days Sober
Subtract sobriety date from today's date. Each full 24-hour period since the sobriety date counts as one day sober. Years are counted as full 365-day blocks; remaining days are divided by 30.4375 to calculate months.
Months and Years
Years are counted as full 365-day blocks. Remaining days after subtracting full years are divided by 30.4375 to calculate the month count. This accounts for leap years while keeping the total readable.
Milestones
The calculator checks 1 day, 1 week, 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, 6 months, 1 year, 18 months, 2 years, 3 years, 5 years, and 10 years. Achieved milestones show the date they were reached; upcoming milestones show a countdown.
Money Saved
Multiply your pre-sobriety daily spend by total days sober. Monthly and yearly savings use the same daily rate multiplied by 30.4375 and 365 respectively.

  5. 5.Understand the limitsThis is a motivational counter. Recovery is personal and timelines vary. The money estimate is rough and does not replace a budget.

Each full 24-hour period since your sobriety date counts as one day. The calculator uses midnight-to-midnight day boundaries based on your local timezone. If today is January 30 and your sobriety date is January 1, the calculator shows 29 days sober.

It tracks 1 day, 1 week, 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, 6 months, 1 year, 18 months, 2 years, 3 years, 5 years, and 10 years. These milestones map roughly to common AA/NA chip celebrations and general recovery markers.

The calculator shows milestone labels and dates but does not assign specific chip colors, since different groups use slightly different systems. The standard milestones (24 hours, 30/60/90 days, 6 months, 9 months, 1 year, 18 months, and multi-year anniversaries) are all covered.

Multiply your pre-sobriety average daily spend by the total number of days sober. For example, if you spent $10/day on drinks and have been sober for 90 days, that is an estimated $900 saved. The monthly and yearly figures use the same daily rate averaged over 30.44 and 365.25 days respectively.

The daily spend field is optional. Leave it empty and the calculator will focus only on your sober time and milestones. If you want a rough estimate, think about your weekly drink cost and divide by 7 — a $35/week habit works out to about $5/day.

Yes. The day counter and milestone tracker work for counting time since any date — whether you are tracking sobriety from alcohol, drugs, gambling, or another habit. The money-saved field is generic and can represent any daily cost you have eliminated.

Yes. The About page includes a general health timeline showing typical recovery stages from 24 hours through 5 years. These are informational benchmarks only — actual recovery varies significantly by individual, drinking history, and overall health.

No. This calculator is a motivational tracker and educational reference. It does not provide medical advice, diagnose conditions, or assess withdrawal risk. If you are concerned about alcohol withdrawal, consult a healthcare provider — withdrawal can be medically serious.
