How it works

Start by entering the lawn length and width, or trace the area on the integrated map to get the square footage. The calculator applies your chosen waste factor to account for cuts and offcuts, then divides the adjusted area by the piece and pallet sizes you set to determine how many units to buy. Finally, it multiplies the unit counts by their per-unit prices and adds tax and install labor to show a full cost breakdown.

Limitations

Assumes a simple rectangular or map-traced shape and does not account for irregular curves, steep slopes, or soil preparation costs. Retailer pricing presets are editable reference values, not live store prices.

Reference ranges

Waste Rate
5% for simple rectangular lawns, 10% for irregular shapes with many cut pieces. Custom rates up to 20% for complex landscapes.
Piece Size
Standard sod pieces are typically 16×24 inches (2.67 sq ft) in the US. Pallets hold 50–75 pieces depending on the grower.
Cost per Square Foot
Sod pricing ranges from $0.30–$0.85 per sq ft for material alone. Installed costs range $1.00–$2.50 per sq ft including labor.
Installation Season
Late spring through early fall is the ideal window. Cool-season grasses prefer spring or fall; warm-season grasses thrive in late spring through summer.

The map measurement tool traces straight-line segments between your clicked points on the satellite view. It is accurate enough for planning and estimating but may differ slightly from a professional survey, especially on curved property lines or sloped terrain.

Delivery fees and soil preparation costs like grading, tilling, or fertilizing are not included by default, but you can account for them by adding them to the custom labor or material price fields. The cost breakdown shows subtotals so you can see each component separately.
