Adjusted Area
The measured area increased by the waste percentage. adjustedArea = area × (1 + wasteRate / 100)

Measure lawn area, convert it to pieces or pallets, and estimate USD cost.
About this calculator
Measures your lawn area from manual dimensions or a map trace, converts the area into sod pieces and pallets based on configurable package sizes, and estimates total cost including tax and installation labor for budgeting.
Homeowners, landscapers, and contractors planning a sod installation project who need quick material counts and cost estimates for budgeting or supplier quotes.
Start by entering the lawn length and width, or trace the area on the integrated map to get the square footage. The calculator applies your chosen waste factor to account for cuts and offcuts, then divides the adjusted area by the piece and pallet sizes you set to determine how many units to buy. Finally, it multiplies the unit counts by their per-unit prices and adds tax and install labor to show a full cost breakdown.
Assumes a simple rectangular or map-traced shape and does not account for irregular curves, steep slopes, or soil preparation costs. Retailer pricing presets are editable reference values, not live store prices.
Formula
The measured area increased by the waste percentage. adjustedArea = area × (1 + wasteRate / 100)
The number of sod pieces needed, rounded up. pieceCount = ceil(adjustedArea / pieceSize)
The number of full pallets, with leftover pieces shown separately. palletCount = ceil(pieceCount / piecesPerPallet)
Material cost plus tax and installation labor. totalCost = pieceCount × piecePrice + taxAmount + installCost
How it works
Step 1
Select feet and inches or meters. The calculator converts all inputs and outputs to match your choice.
Step 2
Type the length and width of the lawn area, or use the map tool to trace the shape and auto-fill the measurement.
Step 3
Pick none, 5%, 10%, or a custom waste percentage to cover offcuts and irregular edges.
Step 4
Adjust the per-piece price, per-pallet price, pallet size, tax rate, and install labor to match your supplier or region.
Step 5
Check the computed piece count, pallet count, leftover pieces, and the full cost breakdown with and without tax.
Step 6
Switch between Home Depot, Lowe's/Rona, or Custom presets to compare pricing side by side.
Reference ranges
5% for simple rectangular lawns, 10% for irregular shapes with many cut pieces. Custom rates up to 20% for complex landscapes.
Standard sod pieces are typically 16×24 inches (2.67 sq ft) in the US. Pallets hold 50–75 pieces depending on the grower.
Sod pricing ranges from $0.30–$0.85 per sq ft for material alone. Installed costs range $1.00–$2.50 per sq ft including labor.
Late spring through early fall is the ideal window. Cool-season grasses prefer spring or fall; warm-season grasses thrive in late spring through summer.
