Square Feet Calculator
Calculate area in square feet for rectangles, triangles, circles, and trapezoids. Use feet and inches together, trace on a map, then estimate tile, flooring, concrete, or paint from the same result.

What this does
Computes the area of a rectangle, triangle, circle, or trapezoid in square feet and square meters. A Feet & Inches mode accepts mixed imperial units. A Map mode lets you trace a boundary on satellite imagery. After computing area, an optional material extension estimates tile count, flooring boxes, concrete volume, or wall paint.
Who it is for
Homeowners planning renovations, contractors doing takeoffs, DIYers buying materials, and anyone who needs fast area math in imperial or metric units.
How it works
Select a shape mode and unit. Enter the required dimensions. The calculator converts everything to feet internally, applies the geometric formula, and displays the area in square feet and square meters. Switch to Map mode to trace a boundary on satellite or street maps. Expand the Materials section to estimate materials for tile, flooring, concrete, or wall paint.
Limitations
Assumes flat, planar shapes. Map area uses spherical geometry approximations and may differ from surveyed values. Material estimates are rough guides; always confirm with supplier specifications and add extra waste for complex cuts or patterns.
Key calculations
- Rectangle
- Area = length(ft) × width(ft)
- Triangle
- Area = base(ft) × height(ft) / 2
- Circle
- Area = π × (diameter(ft) / 2)²
- Trapezoid
- Area = ((base1(ft) + base2(ft)) / 2) × height(ft)
- Feet & Inches
- Each dimension = feet + (inches / 12). Then use the rectangle formula.
- Tile
- Tiles = ceil(area × (1 + waste%) / ((tileW + gap) × (tileH + gap)))
- Flooring
- Boxes = ceil(area / coveragePerBox) or ceil(area / (plankWidth × plankLength))
- Concrete
- Volume(ft³) = area × depth(ft); yd³ = ft³ / 27
- Wall Paint
- Gallons = (area × coats) / coveragePerGallon
Reference ranges
- Small bathroom
- A typical 5x8 ft bathroom is 40 sq ft. A half-bath at 5x5 ft is 25 sq ft.
- Average bedroom
- A 10x12 ft bedroom is 120 sq ft. A master bedroom at 14x16 ft is 224 sq ft.
- Single-car garage
- A 12x22 ft garage is 264 sq ft. A two-car garage at 20x20 ft is 400 sq ft.
- Standard driveway
- A 10x20 ft parking pad is 200 sq ft. A full driveway at 12x50 ft is 600 sq ft.
How to use it
- 1.Select a shape modeChoose Rectangle, Triangle, Circle, Trapezoid, Feet & Inches, or Map.
- 2.Pick a unitFor shape modes, choose ft, in, m, or cm. Feet & Inches uses its own ft+in inputs.
- 3.Enter dimensionsFill the fields for your selected shape. The calculator converts to feet internally.
- 4.Read the areaThe result shows square feet and square meters with the formula used.
- 5.Trace on a map (optional)Switch to Map mode, search an address, and click to trace a boundary.
- 6.Estimate materials (optional)Expand the Materials section and choose Tile, Flooring, Concrete, or Wall to see quantities.
For a rectangle, multiply length by width in feet. For a triangle, multiply base by height and divide by 2. For a circle, use π × radius². This calculator handles all three shapes plus trapezoids, mixed feet+inches, and map tracing.
Use the Feet & Inches mode. Enter the foot and inch parts separately for length and width. The calculator converts inches to decimal feet (e.g. 6 in → 0.5 ft) and then multiplies. For example, 10 ft 6 in becomes 10.5 ft.
Yes. After you compute the area, expand the Materials section and select Tile or Flooring. Enter your tile or plank dimensions, and the calculator estimates the quantity needed, including an optional waste percentage for tile.
Compute the area first, then open the Materials section and choose Concrete. Enter the depth in your preferred unit. The calculator shows cubic feet and cubic yards.
Yes. Switch to Map mode, search for an address, and click on the map to trace a boundary. The calculator uses spherical geometry to estimate the enclosed area in square feet and square meters.
Shape modes support feet, inches, meters, and centimeters. Results are always shown in square feet and square meters so you can compare across unit systems.
Map area uses a spherical geometry approximation based on latitude and longitude points. It is accurate enough for rough estimates and material planning, but it may differ from professional survey data.
