Stride from height
Estimated stride = height in inches × 0.414. This is a standard population-average multiplier used to estimate step length from height when a direct measurement is not available.
Health
Estimate walking distance from steps, height, or exact stride.
About this calculator
Converts steps to walking distance in miles or kilometers using your height to estimate stride length, or an exact stride measurement. Also converts distance back to step count and optionally estimates calories burned based on your weight for a complete walking picture.
Walkers, runners, fitness trackers, and anyone who wants to understand how their step count translates to actual distance. Useful for setting walking goals, comparing activity across devices, or estimating calorie expenditure during walks.
The calculator estimates stride length from height using a standard 0.414 multiplier, or uses a manually entered stride. For steps-to-distance mode, it multiplies steps by stride and divides by inches per mile (63,360). For distance-to-steps mode, it multiplies distance by inches per mile and divides by stride. Calories are estimated using a 0.53 cal/lb/mile factor applied to the walking distance and body weight.
Stride length varies with walking speed, terrain, footwear, and individual biomechanics—the height-based formula is a population average, not a personal measurement. Calorie estimates are rough and do not account for intensity, incline, or individual metabolism.
Formula
Estimated stride = height in inches × 0.414. This is a standard population-average multiplier used to estimate step length from height when a direct measurement is not available.
Miles = steps × stride (in inches) / 63,360 (inches per mile). Kilometers = miles × 1.609344. The same stride applies in both directions.
Steps = distance (in miles) × 63,360 / stride (in inches). For kilometers, first convert to miles by dividing by 1.609344.
Calories ≈ miles × weight (in pounds) × 0.53. This formula estimates gross calories for walking on level ground at a moderate pace and does not account for incline or intensity.
How it works
Step 1
Use steps to miles for walking distance, or switch to distance to see the step count.
Step 2
Estimate stride from height or enter an exact stride in inches or centimeters.
Step 3
Type a step count, or enter miles or kilometers for the reverse conversion path.
Step 4
Read miles, kilometers, steps per mile, steps per kilometer, and optional calories on the same page.
Reference ranges
Averages 2,000–2,500 steps per mile depending on stride. Taller people (6 ft / 183 cm) may need ~2,000 steps per mile; shorter people (5 ft / 152 cm) may need ~2,400.
The common wellness goal translates to 4–5 miles (6.4–8 km) for most adults. Actual distance varies with stride length, which is why height-based estimates improve accuracy over a fixed rule.
Average walking stride is about 28–34 inches (71–86 cm). The height-based estimate (0.414 × height) gives a 5'6" person roughly a 27.3-inch stride and a 6' person about a 29.8-inch stride.
Walking burns roughly 0.53 × body weight (in pounds) per mile. A 150 lb (68 kg) person burns approximately 80 calories per mile, so a 10,000-step day (roughly 5 miles) burns about 400 calories.
