Estimates the concrete blocks (CMUs) needed for walls, steps, and whole-house projects, accounting for door and window openings, waste, and pallet quantities. It also calculates mortar bags, cost ranges, and a printable material sheet.

For homeowners, masons, contractors, and DIYers planning concrete block construction, including foundation walls, retaining walls, block steps, and full-house builds.
How it works
Wall mode calculates gross area, subtracts opening areas, then divides by the face area of one block. Steps mode models stacked block layers from riser height and tread depth. House mode combines wall sections and openings. Waste percentage and pallet size adjust purchase quantities.
Limitations
Assumes standard running bond and does not model half-blocks, corners, bond beams, or reinforcing steel. Mortar estimates vary with joint thickness and block type. Foundation and structural engineering requirements are outside the scope.
Key calculations
- Block count for walls
- blocks = (wallArea − openingArea) / blockFaceArea. The face area includes the mortar joint.
- Block count for steps
- Steps are modeled as stacked levels. Each level depends on step width, block length, and the number of courses for that level.
- Pallet calculation
- fullPallets = floor(totalBlocks / palletSize). looseBlocks = totalBlocks mod palletSize. Cost covers full-pallet and partial-pallet options.
- Mortar bags
- The calculator multiplies total blocks by the mortar rate per block to estimate bags needed.
Reference ranges
- Standard block face coverage
- A nominal 8 × 8 × 16 in block with 3/8 in mortar joints covers about 0.89 sq ft of wall face. This is a common US CMU reference.
- Waste allowance
- 5% is a standard starting point for simple walls. Use 10% for many openings, corners, or complex layouts, and 15% or more for curved walls or first-time builders.
- Pallet sizes
- Standard 8 × 8 × 16 blocks often ship 72 per pallet, but counts range from 60 to 120. The pallet size is editable.
- Mortar coverage
- A 60–80 lb bag of masonry mix yields roughly 30–35 standard blocks with 3/8 in joints. Half-block and corner-heavy layouts may use more.
