How it works

Enter your pool volume manually or estimate it by selecting your pool shape (rectangle or round) and entering the dimensions. Set your current salt level in ppm, your target ppm, and the salt cell brand (Generic, Pentair, Hayward, or Jandy) to apply the recommended range. The calculator computes the salt weight needed, divides by your bag size, and shows whether the result is in range, below range, or above range.

Limitations

The calculator only estimates the salt dose needed based on the ppm gap and pool volume. It does not replace a proper water test kit, chlorinator system maintenance, or manufacturer guidance. Brand ranges shown are typical values and may differ from exact specifications for your specific model. Always add salt in stages and retest after circulation to avoid overshooting.

Key calculations

Salt Dose from PPM Gap
For US gallons: salt(lbs) = volume(gal) × (targetPPM - currentPPM) / 12,000 × 1.5. For liters: salt(kg) = volume(L) × (targetPPM - currentPPM) / 1,000,000 × 1.5. The 1.5 factor accounts for the density of pool salt versus pure NaCl.
Rectangular Pool Volume
volume(gal) = length(ft) × width(ft) × averageDepth(ft) × 7.48. For liters the constant changes: volume(L) = length(m) × width(m) × averageDepth(m) × 1000. The 7.48 factor converts cubic feet to US gallons.
Round Pool Volume
volume(gal) = diameter(ft)² × averageDepth(ft) × 5.9. For liters: volume(L) = diameter(m)² × averageDepth(m) × 785. These formulas assume a uniformly cylindrical pool shape.
Bag Count
bagsNeeded = ceil(saltWeight / bagSize). The calculator rounds up to the nearest whole bag so you never buy too little. For 40 lb bags, a 120 lb salt dose requires ceil(120 / 40) = 3 bags.

Recommended range is typically 2700–3400 ppm with an ideal target around 3200 ppm. Always check your specific chlorinator manual as unbranded cells vary by manufacturer.
Pentair
Recommended range is 2700–3400 ppm with an ideal target of 3000–3200 ppm. Pentair IntelliChlor and IC series cells operate best within this window.
Hayward
Recommended range is 2700–3400 ppm with an ideal target of 3000–3200 ppm. Hayward AquaRite and TurboCell systems use this range for optimal chlorine production.
Jandy
Recommended range is 2700–3400 ppm with an ideal target of 3000–3200 ppm. Jandy AquaPure and Pro Series cells follow similar ranges to other major brands.

No. This page is designed specifically for pool salt used in saltwater chlorinator systems. Ice melt salt, water softener salt, and table salt contain different additives or anti-caking agents that can damage your chlorinator cell and pool equipment. Only use pool-grade salt or sodium chloride specifically labeled for swimming pools.

Yes. The calculator accepts pool volume in either US gallons or liters. The salt dose result is displayed in both pounds and kilograms regardless of which volume unit you choose, and the bag count adjusts to your selected bag size (40 lb or 25 kg) so you always know exactly what to buy.

For salt additions over 80–100 lb (or 40+ kg), it is better to split the dose into two or three stages. Add one portion, let the pump run for 4–6 hours to circulate and dissolve the salt, retest the water, then add more if needed. This staged approach helps you avoid overshooting the target ppm.

The calculator returns a salt dose of zero because you do not need to add more salt. If your current level is significantly above the target, the calculator shows a Drain / Refill status, indicating that the only practical way to lower salinity is to dilute the pool water by draining a portion and refilling with fresh water.

Always use a reliable test kit or test strips to measure your current salt level, and refer to your chlorinator manual for the exact recommended range.

The calculator includes presets for Generic, Pentair, Hayward, and Jandy. Each preset applies a typical ideal salt range for that brand (most major brands recommend 2700–3400 ppm). If your brand is not listed, select Generic and manually set the target ppm to match your manufacturer's recommendation.

Oversalt mode adds a small buffer (roughly 10–15%) to the calculated salt dose to compensate for measurement inaccuracies in home test kits and incomplete salt dissolution. It is enabled by default and recommended for most pool owners. Disable it if you have a precise digital salt meter or if you prefer to add salt incrementally.
